Political events in Vijayawada add to woes

Public getting caught up in traffic snarls due to rallies, roadshows.

Vijayawada: Rallies and road shows of political parties across the city are increasing the traffic woes of citizens. After being made the capital, the city has been witnessing huge political events and protests, which cause traffic jams.

Already, Vijayawada is facing problems due to traffic diversions for the sake of development works.

Residents of city outskirts are now wary of traffic jams at Tunnel Centre, Enikepadu, Ramavarappadu, Executive Club Circle and I Town area.

"The police should consider the problems of citizens before permitting political parties in organising huge rallies. The YSRC rally for Malladi Vishnu created problem for motorists as party followers had blocked traffic on MG Road for over an hour. On Monday, Jana Sena chief Pawan Kalyan fans obstructed the traffic for hours. Because of these rallies, I have been put up on road for almost two hours," M. Vignesh Yadav, a techie, said.

"Traffic problems in the city have doubled in the past two years. Earlier, motorists had to wait for the CM’s convoy to pass by. Now, they have to also deal with political events. The city police should consider these problems and make alternative traffic diversions," V.S Sunil Jain, a businessman from old city, said.

"We are putting maximum efforts to clear traffic problems in the city. Political rallies and dharnas were given permission with specific guidelines and we will take necessary measures to regulate traffic," DCP Kranti Rana Tata said.
