Karnataka High Court relief to Ratan Tata in book copyright case
BENGALURU: The High Court on Tuesday stayed the criminal proceedings against Ratan Tata, chairman emeritus of the Tata Group, and others before a lower court in Bengaluru, till August 18 in connection with a copyright infringement case.
The court has also issued notices to Halasuru Police, and Bengaluru-based Lieutenant Colonel (Retd) D.K. Havanoor, an author.
Hanavoor had filed a complaint in 2013 over copyright infringement alleging that his book 'March of a foot soldier' was being sold through several websites without his permission. He had named several online websites, including Landmark Etail Ltd. The court had recently issued summons to Ratan Tata, and others, to appear before it in connection with the case on August 4.
Tata had approached the court seeking to quash the case against him stating that the criminal proceedings were on the wrong premise that Ratan Tata owns an entity 'Tata Enterprises, part of the Tata Group of Companies'. "Each Tata company or enterprise operates independently and has its own board of directors and shareholders, to whom it is answerable," the petition stated.
