Kanchi Athi Varadhar Vaibhavam begins

On an average about 50,000 persons are expected to visit the temple daily.

CHENNAI: The majestic 10 feet long idol of Lord Athi Varadhar, which has been brought out from the tank of the ancient Sri Varadharaja Perumal temple in neighbouring Kancheepuram, has been kept on a pedestal, to facilitate darshan for devotees from Monday.

The Lord was placed on reclining posture at the Vasantha Mandapam and He would offer darshan till August 17 and thereafter the idol would be placed in the temple tank to be raised again after 40 years. Anticipating lakhs of devotees during the 48 days, the temple authorities and Kancheepuram district administration have made elaborate security arrangements to ensure hassle-free darshan.

Earlier, after a herbal bath the idol was kept on the pedestal. Governor Banwarilal Purohit offered worship. No archana or abhishekam would be performed to the idol during the Vaibhavam. However, floral offerings from devotees are accepted. Neivedhyam would be offered to the Lord.

On an average about 50,000 persons are expected to visit the temple daily. Roads have been laid wherever necessary and few stretches have been widened.

Temporary bus stands have been established at Orikkai, Oli Mohammedpet and Pachaiyappa’s College grounds. Parking facility has also been provided near
the temple.

As lakhs of people would visit the temple during the vaibhavam, district Collector P. Ponniah said water dispensers and mobile toilets have been installed at several places.
