Hyderabad: 340 revellers held in June
Hyderabad: A total of 340 revellers were imprisoned and the driving licence of 121 traffic violators were cancelled for getting behind the wheel in an inebriated condition, by the court in June.
During the special drive on drunk drivers by the Hyderabad traffic police, as many as 2,536 drunk driving cases were registered across the city and a total fine of Rs 54 lakh was imposed on the violators by the local courts.
However, the hefty penalties and previous counselling sessions given to the violators seemed to have only a little effect on the motorists as drunk driving cases are regularly being registered.
Two persons were awarded imprisonment of the highest of 15 days and 130 violators were awarded imprisonment till the rising of the court. The 3rd and 4th Metropolitan Magistrate Courts, Nampally, Hyderabad awarded imprisonment to the 340 respondents ranging from one day to 15 days.
Additional commissioner of police traffic, Anil Kumar, said, “The driving licences for repeated offenders would be cancelled. Due to their negligence, innocent people face problems. We are repeatedly conducting special drives on lorries, autorickshaws and other special drives. We request the citizens to avoid drunk driving for the safety of commuters and themselves.”
The violators were also counselled at TTI, Goshamahal and Begumpet. The drive against violators will continue.
