Don't delay retirement: Telangana doctors

The government has asked the director of health and medical education to submit details of doctors retiring in the next two years.

Hyderabad: The Telangana Government Doctors Association is against a proposal allegedly being pushed by AP-native doctors to increasing the retirement age from 58 to 60 years.

In a representation to the government, association president Dr P. Praveen said, “If the retirement age is increased, doctors from Andhra Pradesh who are in senior positions will continue to stay and TS doctors will not get a chance.”

The government has asked the director of health and medical education to submit details of doctors retiring in the next two years. A senior doctor said there was a lot of lobbying by senior doctors to increase the retirement age.

Senior resident Dr G. Srinivas said, “How can the government give extension in retirement age to doctors when there are many senior residents waiting to get their promotions?”

Sources said there were 5,000 doctors waiting to be recruited at different levels and another 5,000 waiting for promotions in the teaching hospitals.

The finance department is said to be looking at pay-outs that it will have to make to retiring employees. With 60,000 employees retiring this year and another 50,000 in 2018 the burden on the government is very high. This is driving them to look at options where doctors can be retained in services for longer.
