Counters remain closed at Walayar checkpost

The counters at the Walayar commercial check post were closed on Saturday with the implementation of GST.

PALAKKAD: The counters at the Walayar commercial check post were closed on Saturday with the implementation of GST. As many as 1,700 trucks passed through the check post by 11 p.m. by handing over the copy of the invoice and the declaration form named GST KER 1. The drivers of the trucks taking goods to the state stopped their vehicles either on the main road near the check post counter or the service road and handed over the copy of the invoice and the declaration form to the officials standing by the road and crossed over to Kerala within a few seconds.

Deputy commissioner R.S. Manoj told DC that an average of 2,000 vehicles pass through the check post daily. The main difference on day one of GST was that the drivers did not have to park their trucks at the check post, get their documents verified and collect tokens for paying the commercial tax. "Some of them who found it difficult to get the declaration form from the GST site were given exemptions and we collected only the copy of the invoice. With the e-way bill, which is expected to be implemented within three months, there won't be any need for the vehicles to even hand over these documents at the check post. They will have to keep a copy of the e-way bills while transporting goods anywhere. The bills need to be produced during random checks," he added.

The full-fledged GST networks would function within six months. Till then, the K-VAT site would be used for preparing declarations, officials at the check post said. With the counters at the check post being reduced by over one third, most of the staffers would be shifted to the squads for doing surprise inspections on the roads, Mr Manoj said.
