GHMC's wasted' trucks

Shortage of transport vehicles is also causing garbage to pile up at collection and transfer centres across the city.

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has procured 45 new garbage transporting vehicles after phasing out old ones, but a grand total of 37 new vehicles are simply lying idle due to reasons best known only to the civic body.

And shortage of transport vehicles is also causing garbage to pile up at collection and transfer centres across the city. The GHMC transport wing has a total of 773 garbage transporting vehicles of which the GHMC had phased out 92 vehicles which were over 15 years old. Another 187 had to be condemned.

The procurement of the 45 new compactors (waste transporters) cost the civic body Rs 6.15 crore but so far, the compactors are only being deployed at Kapra and Uppal circles and the remaining 37 are idle.

A standing committee, chaired by Hyderabad mayor Bonthu Ram Mohan explained there was a “budget issue” which had forced them to keep the vehicles idle.
