Warangal: An unfortunate woman on Saturday afternoon witnessed her husband and two sisters drown in the Bommakur reservoir in Jangaon district.

According to police, the deceased were identified as Lakavath Sangeetha, 19, Lakavath Sumalatha, 20, and Avinash, 32. While Sangeetha and Sumalatha were residents of Bandathanda under Mekalagutta village in Raghunathpally mandal, Avinash was a native of Jangaon town and had joined his in-laws’ in Bandathanda for the summer holidays. Avinash, his wife Bhargavi, and her two sisters on Saturday decided to go swimming in the Bommakur reservoir.

While Bhargavi stayed ashore, the other three entered the water. It may be noted here that none of them knew how to swim.

While inside the water, the trio unknowingly stepped into the deep section of the riverbed following which, they drowned one after the other. Bhargavi, who was recording a video of the three on her mobile phone, can be heard screaming out their names as they disappeared into the water.

A local heard her calls for help and rushed to the rescue, however, it was too late by the time he got there. Villagers attempted to find the trio inside the water but to no avail.

Expert swimmers were then called in by the police. Several minutes into their search, the three dead bodies were located and pulled ashore.

Villagers complained that it was the illegal sand mining in the reservoir that had caused its surface to lose its evenness, which could have led to the mishap.
