Chennai: Tired of enduring torture, woman sets husband afire
Chennai: Fed up with years of physical and mental torture, a woman burnt her husband alive in Kancheepuram. She later surrendered herself at the local police station and confessed that she had killed him by burning him with kerosene.
Malar (48) killed her alcoholic husband Kannappan (53). The middle-aged couple, residents of Anaikundram near Madurantakam in Kancheepuram were labourers.
Police said quoting Malar, "He had been beating her for many years. On several occasions, he even cut her with a knife. She had thought of leaving him long ago but did not because of the family. In the end, it became unbearable and she killed him."
Kannappan was alcoholic who tortured his wife. He used to beat her and abuse her daily. He used to pawn her jewellery. On Friday night, Kannapan came home drunk and started hitting her. After a few minutes, he went out and fell unconscious in the paddy field near his house. Malar poured kerosene on him and allegedly set him on fire. Hearing his cries, villagers rushed him to the Chengalpattu government hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. Later, Malar came to Orathi police station and surrendered. On being questioned, she admitted to killing her drunk husband in a fit of rage. A case has been registered and further investigations are on.
