Kerala school reopening day turns tragic as 2 students die in mishaps

The city police registered a case against the auto driver and the scooter rider for negligent driving.

Kollam/Kozhikode: The school reopening on Wednesday turned tragic for two students, who lost their lives in two accidents, one in Kollam and the other in Kozhikode.

Nishanth, 13, of MGTHS at Mukhathala in Kollam, died on the spot when a pillar of the school building collapsed on him. Nishanth, son of Raveendran, Dwaya Bhavan, Pangonam, Mukhathala, had joined the eighth standard after getting transfer from Alummood UP school.

The incident took place around 1.30 pm when the pillar on the corner of the veranda crashed on the boy. He was taken to a private hospital, but was declared brought dead. The square brick pillar was apparently weak as rainwater from the roof of the old building had drained through it.

In Kozhikode, P. Nooja Nashra, 5, UKG student of Kundayithod St Francis English Medium School, Cheruvannur, was killed in a road accident. Nooja was going to the school along with her sister and three other students when the autorickshaw in which they were travelling collided with a scooter at Cheruvannur BC Road. Nooja was thrown out of the auto and seriously injured on the head. Though she was rushed to a private hospital, she succumbed to her injuries.

Her sister Nija Nashram, studying in fifth standard, and the other students, Devadutt, Krishna Theertha and Amith, escaped with minor injuries.

Nooja is the daughter of Najmal Babu, an officer in ports, and Nabusha. Her body was released to the relatives after post-mortem at Kozhikode Medical College. The city police registered a case against the auto driver and the scooter rider for negligent driving.
