Stir against Pottery Town demolition

There are about 100 families depending on pottery as a profession and now due to the metro construction they will be displaced.

Bengaluru: Members of Pottery Town Potters Association staged a protest against the move to demolish the two-century old Pottery town to make way for Metro rail.

Social activist Kumar Jahgirdar, who is supporting the protesters, said the members of Pottery town were being forced out of their establishments.

"There are about 100 families depending on pottery as a profession and now due to the metro construction they will be displaced. Considering the real estate value, it is hard for these poor people to afford housing and we have sought for alternate arrangement," he said.

The potters insist on preserving the famous heritage site from destruction and sought the government to provide alternate arrangements for the families that would get displaced.

The Save Bangalore Heritage Activists group would contact the Chief Minister in this regard and would raise awareness among the people by stating protests.

"Of course the metro is important and is in public interest. We are not denying it, but these potters have been staying here for 200 years and have helped the city during various festivals. They shouldn't be neglected," Jahgirdar said.
