Hyderabad: 4 students die in accident

Dial on speedometer was pointing at 140 kmph.

Hyderabad: In a road accident that took place in Bommalaramaram, four students died and one suffered critical injuries when their car fell into a pit beside the culvert near Naginenipally village on Tuesday night.

The students had been partying in a private guest house located on the outskirts of Bommalaramaram that night and were on their way to get a mobile phone charger when the mishap took place, the Rachakonda police said.

According to the Bhongir police, about 17 students, including 9 female students, of Sri Indu College of Engineering and Technology, Ibrahimpatnam, had appeared for the last examination of their final semester in computer science engineering on Tuesday.

To celebrate, they had collectively organised this farewell party at the guest house, which was located about 57 km from the college. They had informed their parents about the party.

Around 7 pm, 9 students left the guesthouse to go home, while the other 8 stayed back.

Around 10 pm, however, they realised that they needed a mobile phone charger and so, in order to acquire one, 5 of them set out in a car (TS 08 EF 8798) towards Bibinagar.

As they approached the outskirts of Naginenipally, Manish Reddy, who was behind the wheels did not notice a steep curve in the road and landed the car in a pit beside the culvert. The car flung into the air and fell at a distance.

The steering, dashboard, and several parts of its engine were dislodged from the vehicle, and its fore was crushed by the impact of the hit.

When the police recovered its speedometer, they found that its dial was pointing at 140 kmph.

Three students G. Sai Chaitanya Reddy of Saroornagar, J. Praneetha of Chaderghat, and M. Spoorthy Reddy of LB Nagar died on the spot, while Manish and K. Vineeth Reddy suffered critical injuries.

Upon inspection, the police found a large number of alcohol bottles and a hookah pot at the guesthouse where the students were partying.

Bhongir circle inspector Y. Surendar Reddy said, “We are not sure if the student who driving was under the influence of alcohol. Tests need to be conducted, and he is currently in critical condition. Prima facie, the accident appears to be a result of over speeding due to which, Manish lost control of the car and the 5 landed in the pit beside the culvert.”

Based on a complaint filed by D. Rajashekar Reddy, the maternal uncle of the deceased Chaitanya, the Bommalaramaram police have registered a case against Manish under sections 304 A and 337 of the IPC for further investigation.

The bodies of the deceased students were handed over to their kin after the autopsy at the Bhongir area hospital on Wednesday.
