Supreme Court seeks report on Rajiv Gandhi Probe

Supreme Court directed CBI to indicate the time frame within which the probe will be completed.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday directed the CBI to file a status report on the probe into the alleged “larger conspiracy” behind assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and to indicate the time frame within which the probe will be completed.

A bench of Justices Ranjan Gogoi and Nivin Sinha gave this direction on a petition filed by one of the convicts Perarivalan, serving life imprisonment alleging that CBI did not probe the larger conspiracy behind the killing of Rajiv Gandhi in 1991 despite an order from a TADA court in Chennai.

Earlier the Additional Solicitor General Maninder Singh informed the court that since the accused in the larger conspiracy being probed by the Multi Disciplinary Monitoring Agency of the CBI are all proclaimed offenders, certain extradition formalities have to be complied with.
