Meet wtih teachers on syllabus, reforms

School edu development, welfare of staff to be discussed.

Chennai: Ahead of syllabus revamp and examination reforms, the department of school education has called a meeting with all teachers and non-teachers' associations in the state on Tuesday.

“The issues related to development of school education and welfare of staff will be discussed in the meeting,” a letter said quoting R. Elangovan, Director of School Education.

The meeting will be headed by school education minister K.A. Sengottaiyan. In view of Neet and other competitive exams, the department is planning to adopt a part of NCERT syllabus for class 11 from next academic year. It is also mulling over to make the class 11 exam as board exam along with class 10 and 12 exams.

“We expect the new syllabus for higher secondary classes and other major revamps will be discussed in the meeting,” said Sami. Sathyamurthy, State President, Tamil Nadu High and Higher Secondary School Headmasters' Association.

He said such a meeting is being conducted after the gap of four years. The department is planning to make a several key announcements in the coming weeks.

Teacher associations also are planning to raise several demands including equal pay with the central government teachers at the meeting. “We will ask for inclusion of vocational education in all schools.

At present, close to 1,000 government higher secondary schools in the state do not have vocational stream,” said S.N. Janardhanan, State General Secretary, Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary School Vocational Teachers Kazhagam.

He further said, “For more than 30 years vocational teachers are working without any promotion.” Sources in the school education department said the minister may accept some demands from teacher associations and will likely to issue some orders tomorrow. Representatives from over 30 associations are expected to take part in the meeting.
