Chennai: Woman constable dies of liver infection

Seetha was with the Armed Reserve Forces and was posted at the Madras high court and was found to have a known history of Hepatitis C.

Chennai: A 27-year-old lady constable, T. Seetha, who had been undergoing treatment for Hepatitis C, died of acute liver infection on Sunday evening at Stanley Medical College.

Seetha was with the Armed Reserve Forces and was posted at the Madras high court and was found to have a known history of Hepatitis C. “She was brought in on Sunday at 4.30 am with infection in her liver. She had fever for the last 10 days,” Dr Isaac C. Moses, Dean of Stanley Medical College said. “She died of acute liver failure at 5.30 pm on Sunday,” he added.

Reacting to allegations doing rounds that Seetha, who had not been keeping well for the past 20 days, was denied leave for treatment, a senior official from the Armed Reserve Forces said that she had been absent from duty from April 19.

“On April 18, she took permission for meeting a doctor the following day, thus was granted permission to come late for duty. But she did not turn up at all, following which she was marked absent from duty,” the official said.

“Prior to her visit to the doctor, her colleagues had asked her to apply for medical leave as she was not feeling well but she did not apply,” the official added.
On April 20, her husband walked in on April 20 without a medical certificate, demanding medical leave, he said.

Leave was sanctioned on April 29, a day after her husband submitted a medical certificate but till that period she had been undergoing treatment at a private medical centre.
