Web counselling confuses Telangana doctors

Dr R Raghu of the association said the system was s not taking rank holders into account.

Hyderabad: Doctors said they were confused by web counselling for post-graduate medical courses as 50 seats were left vacant after the first round of conselling for 500 seats.

Doctors from the BC communities alleged that the NTR Health University had kept the seats vacant despite merit students participating in the counselling.
Dr P Srinivas, a general medicine student from Telangana state, said, “In the open category, BC students have not been given their due. The software is flawed and it has overlooked us.”

Students have approached the Telangana Government Doctors Association which is insisting that the government must re-consider first phase of counselling.
Dr R Raghu of the association said the system was s not taking rank holders into account. “It must follow the rank pattern. In this case it is taking into account the number of students from each region which is not correct.”

Those who have lost out in the first round will now face tough competition in second round from students from BC and reserved categories. Sought after seats like general medicine, radiology, paediatric, gynaecology and anaesthesia have gone vacant in the first round.

Dr R. Abhilash, a student from AP, said, “I did not get a seat in paediatrics despite being a merit holder. The website shows the seat empty. How is that possible?” University vice-chancellor Dr Karunakar Reddy said that in the open category, all students were considered on the basis of merit.

“Their reservations have not been taken into account. In the second round of counselling, the reserved category will be looked into.”
