Chennai gets new police chief
Chennai: A day after Election commission of India brought in a new DGP for elections in Tamil Nadu, the EC shifted the Chennai police commissioner DGP T.K. Rajendran on Sunday, posting ADGP Ashutosh Shukla, who was with prohibition enforcement, as the new city police chief. The EC also posted Dr C. Sylendra Babu as ADGP, law and order after moving J. K.Tripathy out of the post. Both Rajendran and Tripathy were not given any other postings as of Sunday.
Ashutosh Shukla is an officer from the 1986 batch of IPS officers from TN cadre and is a native of UP. He is an officer who moves around with commando protection because of a threat to his life from Muslim fundamentalists as well as Maoists. He had been part of the team, which worked to eliminate Imam Ali in an encounter in Bengaluru. Imam Ali, an Al Uma activist, had escaped from Madurai while in transit.
Ashuthosh Shukla returned to TN cadre after serving on a deputation to the Centre for nearly a year and a half when he served as IG and ADGP in CRPF before returning to his home cadre. While in CRPF he was with a special action force that fought against Maoist insurgency.
