National flag centenary celebrations held
KAKINADA: The Congress' Rajamahendravaram unit celebrated the centenary of the National Flag on Thursday at the city party office. Congress leaders and workers unfurled the National Flag and paid rich tributes to Pingali Venkayya, the designer of the Flag.
Presiding over the function, city Congress president Balepalli Muralidhar said the late Pingala Venkayya was a selfless freedom fighter and had designed the National Flag by way of a service to the nation without aiming at any monetary benefit. The people of the country honour Pingala Venkayya when they pay their respects to the Tricolour, he said.
Mahila Congress leader Akula Bhagya Lakshmi said Pingali Venkayya instilled patriotism among the people.
Marking the occasion, the leaders garlanded a photo of Pingali Venkayya. Eminent astrologer Madhura Pala Sankara Sarma was felicitated by Congress leaders. Pradesh Congress Committee leader Bezawada Ranga, senior Congress leader Nallapati Syam, K Viswanath, Chamarthi Leelavathi, Md Firoz, NSUI secretary Nava Tarakesh were among those present.
Meanwhile, PCC working president Dr N. Tulasi Reddy said the National Flag is a symbol of national dignity and patriotism. Congress leaders celebrated the centenary of the National Flag at an event held in Vempalle Kadapa district. “It is said that the white colour in the middle of the Tricolour was initially a spinning wheel and this was later replaced with the Ashoka Chakra,” the PCC working president said.
Tulasi Reddy said it was a matter of pride for all Telugus that Telugu artist Pingali Venkayya designed the unique flag. Congress leaders saluted the flag on the occasion.
