Intensive checks are being carried ahead of the elections.

Hyderabad: The Cyberabad police seized about Rs 24 lakh cash, silver articles weighing about 29 kg and Rs 3.5 lakh worth banned tobacco products while checking vehicles at Aramghar crossroads on Monday.

Intensive checks are being carried ahead of the elections.

Rajendranagar ACP K. Ashok Chakravarthy said that vehicle-checking was organised at several places and at Aramghar crossroads as a border check post of Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts.

As many as 5,000 vehicles entering and leaving the city were checked by 12 teams of police including three inspector-rank officers and 18 sub-inspectors under the limits of Mailardevpally and Rajendranagar police stations, which are a part of the Chevella Lok Sabha constituency.

During the checks in the private buses, about Rs 24 lakh cash, silver articles weighing 29 kg and Rs 3.5 lakh worth gutka and eight bottles of foreign liquor were seized.

“Cash and silver articles were being transported by a person from Anantapur to Hyderabad. He did not carry any documents related to the cash.

“The cash has been seized and is being handed over to income-tax department,” said Mr Chakravarthy.

The gutka was seized in a bus leaving to Tirupati from Hyderabad.

The suspect who was carrying the contraband escaped on seeing the bus. Police is trying to identify the person who escaped and Mr Chakravarthy said he would be nabbed soon.
