Chasing the minority vote

This was evident from Prime Minister Narendra Modi\'s all out attack on Rahul Gandhi accusing him of fleeing Amethi due to fear of majority community.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Left parties alleged that by fielding Rahul Gandhi from Wayanad the party has created an ideal situation for Sangh Parivar to polarise the people on religious lines and weaken the fight against communal forces.

This was evident from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's all out attack on Rahul Gandhi accusing him of fleeing Amethi due to fear of majority community.

The Left leaders believe that Modi’s speech in Maharasthra has given clear indication about the communal campaign that the BJP plans to unleash in the name of Wayanad constituency. Under these circumstances, the Left has decided to mount twin attack targeting both BJP’s politics of communal polarisation and the Congress’s role of a facilitator. So far the Left had focussed on the failures of Modi government and the threat posed by fascist forces at their election meetings. All that will change henceforth.

While the Left will intensify its campaign for the defeat of BJP, it will also target the Congress for weakening the fight against fascist forces. The LDF will go to the people explaining how Rahul’s candidature in Wayanad would disrupt the maximization of anti BJP votes.

The Left leaders say by fighting the LDF, Rahul has sent a wrong message across the country on the eve of a “do-or-die” elections. The Congress president’s decision will disturb the nationwide efforts to unite secular forces against Modi government.

They say Rahul should have opted for a state like Karnataka if he was serious about fighting and defeating the BJP. But unfortunately he chose to target the Left as BJP does not have much presence in Kerala.

The Left parties allege that the BJP-Sangh Parivar sympathizers have already unleashed a propaganda in social media with all kinds of fake stories about the religious population in Wayanad. Even Muslim League flags are now being portrayed as Pakistani flags by pro BJP elements.

While people in Kerala can see through such false campaigns, the Left leaders say the propaganda could impact voters in north India. A massive counter campaign will be needed on a daily basis to expose the falsehoods and communal hatred being spread in social media.
