Names mooted for Telangana women university

A few historians from the city, however, have proposed the name of Khairunnisa for the university.

Hyderabad: The RSS’ student wing ABVP has proposed the names of Sammakka-Saralamma and Rani Rudrama Devi for the state’s first Mahila Vishwa Vidyalayam, which is to come up at Women’s College at Koti.

“There are no bigger names among women from Telangana than those proposed by us. Hence, it is befitting the first women varsity of Telangana is named after them. Our first preference is Sammakka-Saralamma, followed by Rani Rudrama Devi,” said Mr T. Ramakris-hna, ABVP city president.

TSCHE chairman T. Papi Reddy, however, said that no discussions were held by the higher-ups over the name of the varsity. “Our focus is on clearing the formalities for establishing the first women university of Telangana. Dis-cussions on names will only come at a later stage,” he said.

A few historians from the city, however, have proposed the name of Khairunnisa for the university.

Khairunnisa was the wife of James Kirkpatrick (1798-1805), British Resident in Hyderabad, who built the historic Koti Residency that is presently housing the Women’s College.
