Dalit groups for temple stir in Thiruvananthapuram

The protest march has been called to demand the cancellation of the title granted to the local NSS unit

KOCHI: The Dalit Bhu Avakasa Samrakshana Munnani spearheading an agitation against the attempt by a section of an upper caste community to enclose the open ground adjacent to Bhajan-madom Temple at Vadyamabadi near Choondy in Ernakulam district will hold a protest march and sit-in before the Secretariat in Thiruvan-anthapuram on Tuesday. Poet and writer Kureepuzha Sreekumar will inaugurate the march and the sit-in, said Joy Pavel, the convener of the committee formed to support the struggle.

The protest march has been called to demand the cancellation of the title granted to the local NSS unit for the open ground comprising nearly one acre of land and an end to the attempt to erect a compound wall ending access to the open ground.

The issue has been simmering in the area for more than a year with members of the Dalit community opposing the efforts by the local NSS unit to enclose the land. According to the Samrakshana Munnani the title deed for the revenue land has been obtained fraudulently and seeks an impartial probe into the incident. The agitation at Vadyambadi received state-wide attention with the Dalits and others from the state held a self-respect convention in February.
