Cycling for a greener, healthier Kannur

The cycling club has 400 members, including 100 women.

KANNUR: With a mission to train every child cycling, the Cannanore Cycling Club has set out an ambition plan to make Kannur healthy and green. An off-shoot of Kannur Sporting Club, the Cycling Club started cycling initiatives in November last year and had an official launch on February 25. The club has nearly 400 members, and close 100 of them are females. Recently, they honoured district collector Mir Mohammed Ali, who travels at least three times a week to the collectorate from his bungalow on a bicycle. The collector also promotes environment-friendly activities like making the supermarkets plastic-free.

Started 10 years ago, the Kannur Sporting Club is a huge collective of like-minded people, who finds time for sports and encourage the others to follow a healthy living style, says president P. Shahin. "We also promote those who cycle everyday for nearly 50km. The Corporation granted a cycling track for the cycling lovers in Kannur. We are going to set up a cycling station, where people coming to Kannur can hire a cycle and hand it over at the next point," said Mr Shahin. Five such stations are planned in the first phase.

"On the launching day (on February 25), more than 200 people including their families, cycled around the town," said Mr Shahin. Apart from promoting youngsters, they also encourage women and small kids, by organising family events, where everyone can participate.
