Joint Action Committee gives 'Chalo HCU' call on April 6

HCU is on the boil since Rohith Vemula committed suicide in the hostel campus.

Hyderabad: In order to further intensify their agitation demanding removal and arrest of Hyderabad Central University (HCU) Vice Chancellor Appa Rao Podile, varsity's Joint Action Committee for Social Justice on Saturday gave a call for a protest march 'Chalo HCU' on April 6.

"This is an appeal to all the students, political organisations and people to come to the University of Hyderabad on April 6 to register their protest and express solidarity against the ongoing injustice to Rohit and to the university," a release from JAC issued here said.

The Students' Union of University of Hyderabad (UoHSU) has already sought President Pranab Mukherjee's immediate intervention to resolve issues related to the varsity and ensure the sacking of the VC.

HCU is on the boil since January this year after Dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula committed suicide in the hostel campus.

Since the university administration has imposed a blockade on the campus preventing students to contact anyone from outside, 'Chalo HCU' call is also against the imposed blockade on the university, it said.

On March 23, the varsity authorities decided not to allow any outsider, including media persons and politicians, on the campus.

Yesterday, the JAC protested at university's administration block to oppose the resumption of office by Appa Rao as the VC and demanded his arrest.

"Appa Rao (who has been booked on charge of abetment to suicide of Rohith) is in campus without any bail or legal relief. Since his return (on March 22 the campus is in a state of emergency. Students have been assaulted, deprived of food, water, legal aid, medical aid, cut-off from the outside and also put in jail and slapped with false cases," the JAC alleged.

"In this state of an emergency, students feel extremely threatened and have been demanding his removal from university premises and his arrest," it said.

Activist Medha Patkar will be in the university tomorrow to address the students and express her solidarity, JAC said.
