Mercury may hit 47ºC in Hyderabad this summer: India Meteorological Department

The seasonal average temperature between March and May is likely to rise by 0.5 to 1ºC over last year.

Hyderabad: The mercury may hit 48ºC in the state in May and the temperature could rise to 47ºC in Hyderabad, the India Meteorological Department said in its pre-monsoon report on Friday.

Day temperatures in May could rise beyond 45º Celsius and more heat waves will occur this summer, the IMD said. The seasonal average temperature between March and May is likely to rise by 0.5 to 1ºC over last year.

The state may endure 15-20 heat wave conditions, against seven recorded last year. A heat wave is announced when the maximum temperature rises by 5ºC above normal.

“Elderly and children are likely to be more affected by the heat wave,” said IMD director Y.K. Reddy.
