Hyderabad: Kid run over on way to school

Student, 7, was riding pillion on her dad's scooter when tanker hit them.

Hyderabad: A seven-year-old girl who was heading to school, with her father on a two-wheeler, was killed on the spot when a water tanker rammed the vehicle on Friday morning. The accident occured right in front of Methodist Church.

The victim identified as Dia Jain, 7, was a Class III student of Rosary Convent High School. Her father, Naresh Kumar Jain, is a merchant from Asifnagar.

Abids sub-inspector K. Laxmaiah said that the tanker was coming from the Public Gardens side when it hit the two-wheeler and ran over the riders. Dia died on the spot while Jain sustained serious injuries. Fearing that he would be attacked by by-standers, the driver fled from the spot, Laxmaiah said.

M. Ramaiah, watchman of the Methodist Church, realised something was wrong when he saw passers-by running to the scene. "I found the girl lying motionless on the road and her father calling her. The girl sustained a severe head injury."

Jain was rushed to Kamineni Hospital where he is undergoing treatment and is stated to be out of danger. He sustained injuries to the left side of his abdomen.

The road, which leads to several schools in the area, has no sign boards. Right opposite the Methodist Church is a school. According to rules, the road must be observed as a school zone, with cautionary boards erected on both sides. There is only one sign board here and this too is not visible because of the trees. There are no speed breakers which would have slowed down the traffic.

The driver, Babu Rao, has been booked under IPC Sections- 304 (A) (causing death by negligence) and 337 (causing hurt). Police is also investigating to see whether the tanker had a permit to operate on the city roads.
