2 militants, 4 officers killed in encounter in Jammu and Kashmir

One more CRPF jawan and a J&K cop were killed in subsequent exchange of fire.

SRINAGAR: Presuming both the militants holed up in a private house have been killed in an overnight gun battle in Jammu and Kashmir’s frontier district of Kupw-ara, the security forces began a combing operation in the area early Friday.

While the operating was underway, one of the two gunmen rose from the rubble and opened indiscriminate fire, killing a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Inspector and J&K policeman and injuring five other security personnel, the police sources said.

One more CRPF jawan and a J&K cop were killed in subsequent exchange of fire. A civilian also died during the encounter, the sources said. They said that the gunfight broke out during a cordon-and-search operation launched jointly by the Army’s 22 Rashtriya Rifles, 92 Battalion of the CRPF and J&K police’s counterinsurgency Special Operations Group in Baba Gund village of Handwara area of the district.

The security forces used floodlights to ensure the militants trapped in the area do not escape taking the advantage of darkness, the locals said.
