Kerala: Fronts share eight seats in civic polls
Thiruvananthapuram: Of the 19 seats in Kerala’s three-tier civic bodies that went to the polls on Wednesday, the ruling LDF and opposition UDF shared eight seats each. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had to content with just one seat while two went to independents. Earlier ten were with the UDF and LDF had nine. BJP candidate Ajitha Kumari won the Nooliyodu ward in Vilappil here, which was earlier held by CPM. In Kollam, Kerala Congress (B)'s B. V. Remamani Amma won the Andoor ward in Ummannoor that was earlier held by Congress.
Rinu Mon R. retained Puliyila ward in Nedumpana for CPM. In Pathanamthitta, Ani Varghese retained UDF seat of Manjapramala in Cherukole, while the UDF lost Manneera (Thannithode) to LDF-independent Tijo Thomas. In Alappuzha, R. Jeevan retained Kumarapuram (Ezhupunna), and K Sushma Kalathil Palam (Thakazhi) for the CPM. Congress retained the Thekkummuri north seat in Mutholy, Kottayam, through Jismol Thomas.
UDF could retain two seats in Ernakulam when N. R. Sreenivas won Nettootpadaom (Ramamangalam) and Abdul Basheer Karimukal North (Vadavucode Puthenkurish). CPI retained Puvil North (Chazhoor) in Thrissur with Deepa Vasanthan. Congress lost Mappattukara West (Kulukkallur) to independent Rajan Pootanayil.
In Malappuram, C. Mohandas (Congress) wrested Kottekkad (Vettam) from CPM, while IUML lost Koorada (Tavanur) to independent Abdul Nazar Koorada. IUML retained Talapperummana (Koduvally municipality). In Wayanad, IUML retained Padinjarathara (Kalpetta block) and CPM Appappara (Thirunelli). The LDF lost Peravoor in Kannur to UDF's Pookot M. Siraj. CPI retained Ambalathukkara in Kanhangad block panchayat in Kasaragod.
