Kerala Women's Commission panel visits girl-mom in Kannur

The incident came to light when the Childline volunteers intimated the police about the delivery.

Kozhikode: The State Women’s Commission visited the girl who was allegedly raped by a priest and delivered a baby at Iritty, Kannur, on Wednesday.

Chairperson K.C. Rosakutty assured the girl a safe abode under the Commission where she can pursue her studies and also care the child.

“We are also exploring ways and means on how to assist the girl with a boy,” she added.

On the investigation front, Ms Rosakutty said she was satisfied, and the investigation was progressing in the right direction. “Any individual who commits such heinous crimes against children should be punished to the maximum," she said.

Fr Robin Vadakkumchery, the former vicar of St Sebastian’s church, Neendunokki, Kottiyoor, was arrested the other day for raping the minor girl.

The girl got pregnant and delivered a baby. The incident came to light when the Childline volunteers intimated the police about the delivery.

Meanwhile, the investigation team started perusing the documents and records of the hospital where the girl gave birth to the baby and the orphanage where the newborn was admitted.

Peravoor circle inspector N. Sunilkumar, the investigating officer, told DC that if any procedural violations were found, strict action would be initiated against both the institutions.

On the further probe, he said the police would soon file a petition in court seeking the custody of the priest in judicial remand.
