Hyderabad: Consumers buying' free water

Many residents of these areas complain against the high-handedness of the water tanker drivers.

Hyderabad: Water meant for colonies that do not have individual water connections is being sold for Rs 10 to Rs 30 per drum. In Ghouse Nagar, Noorie Nagar, Hashimabad, Patel Nagar, Millat Nagar, Indra Nagar, Rajeev Gandhi Nagar and Bandlaguda, HMWS&SB water tankers reach every bylanes to supply water.

The water has to be provided for free as these areas are on the tail end of the city and are not served, said Mr. Amjadullah Khan. While highlighting the plight of the residents, he noted, “These people are forced to purchase water from the tankers as they do not have individual water connections. It is a kind of organised loot by authorities and local politicians.”

Many residents of these areas complain against the high-handedness of the water tanker drivers who are not willing to supply water if they are not paid. Moreover, during summer, it would be terrible for the residents of these areas to survive without water, added Mr. Khan.

Mr. Md Ahmed, a resident of Millat Nagar said, “The water tanker comes to our bylanes once in two days. We have to store water. If we fail to pay the driver, he will not show up for the next week. Then we have to keep requesting the officials and local politicians to send the tanker to our colony. The money collected by the driver is shared by all these officials and politicians.”

Ms. Shazia Banu, a resident of Noorie Nagar, said, “The government has given us water connections but there is no water in these pipes from the time they were installed. Despite our repeated complaints to, the authorities they never supply water to us and we are forced to purchase water from these tankers if we do not have to die without it.”

Mr. M. Yadaiah, manager of HMWS&SB, said, “We have provided water connections but there is no supply of water because the works are going on. As soon as the works are completed the residents will start receive water.”
