Bengaluru: Techies breathe easy, Metro's Silk Route to KR Puram soon

In January, a rail-cum-road bridge was announced between Silk Board and KR Puram.

Bengaluru: The Cabinet's approval for the Metro Rail Link between the Central Silk Board and K.R. Puram is bound to make the lives of techies in the IT Corridor and other commuters easier on the 17-km stretch, notorious for its traffic gridlocks.

Promising to complete the line in three years once it takes off, Managing Director of the BMRCL, Pradeep Singh Kharola, says the land acquisition is unlikely to take long as there isn't a lot of it to acquire.

While he wouldn't commit to a specific date to kick off the project, he said the soil testing had been done. As there was no tunneling involved, there was no worry about the terrain. "We are now working on the detailed design, following which the tendering process will begin," he added.

BMRCL's Chief Public Relations Officer Vasanth Rao revealed that the Rs 4,202 crore required for the project would cover the Metro Rail link, the elevated road bridge, land acquisition cost, cost of shifting utilities and everything else.

In January, a rail-cum-road bridge was announced between Silk Board and KR Puram. The elevated road will be built at a height of eight metres and the Metro line will run over it at a height of 16 metres, giving a kind of double-decker effect.

Mr Kharola has in the past explained that the two-layer bridge will start at Ragigudda and reach the Silk Board station via BTM Layout. While one Metro line will go to KR Puram, the other will turn right at Silk Board and head towards Electronic City.

He also explained that the elevated road from the Ragigudda side would split into three directions. One would go towards K.R. Puram along the Outer Ring Road and the second would form a loop near the beginning of the Silk Board flyover before going towards K.R. Puram. The same road will take a deviation towards Electronics City.
