Karti Chidambaram's involvement in Aircel-Maxis issue rocks Parliament

Chidambaram's son accused of having businesses across the world.

New Delhi: AIADMK members on Tuesday stalled proceedings in both Houses of Parliament demanding action on former Minister P Chidambaram’s son Karti on the Aircel-Maxis issue.

Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha faced several adjournments through the day on the issue with proceeedings being virtually washed out due to the uproar.

Both the Houses witnessed continuous disruptions due to the slogan-shouting by AIADMK members who were in the Well, forcing repeated adjournments.

Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day at around 2.45 pm while the day's proceedings of Rajya Sabha were terminated at around 4 pm.

The AIADMK members were displaying copies of an English newspaper which has claimed that Karti has invested in real estate across the world, as per investigations by the Enforcement Directorate and Income Tax authorities during searches at his premises.

In the Upper House, an angry Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien even threatened to suspend the agitating members but to avail. In Rajya Sabha, a Calling Attention Motion on inflammatory speeches by a minister violating the Constitution and oath of office could not be taken up due to the noisy protests by AIADMK.

Trouble started as soon as the House met with AIADMK MPs waiving copies of a newspaper, demanding action against Karti Chidambaram. Chairman Hamid Ansari accused members of promoting the particular newspaper which was “not proper".

Congress hits out at centre
Unfazed by the AIADMK paralysing Parliament on the Karti Chidam-baram issue, the Congress on Tuesday hit back at the government accusing it of using news plants to divert attention from the JNU row and the Rohith Vemula issue.

“A jittery Modi government is using the modus operandi of news plants to divert Parliament's attention from its now exposed anti-Dalit/anti-student policies. The attempt is obviously to distract attention from HRD minister Smriti Irani misleading Parlia-ment and the disappointing Budget which is inflationary,” Randeep Surjewala said. Mr Surjewala said Karti is a private individual.
