Hyderabad: Unused graveyard poses a bottleneck
Hyderabad : A largely empty graveyard lying in disuse for years is the cause for major traffic jams near Nagarjuna Circle. The GHMC is not widening the road as a big wig is opposed to the move. The graveyard is located on the main road, adjacent to Hotel Chutneys just before Nagarjuna traffic circle and diagonally opposite to the Panjagutta graveyard.
Traffic from Jubilee Hills heading towards Punjagutta and Begumpet gets choked before the hotel because of the narrow road. When Cyberabad police commissioner C.V. Anand was the Hyderabad traffic additional commissioner of police, he planned to allow traffic in the reverse direction on one arm of the Punjagutta Y flyover landing before Chutneys for faster movement of vehicles during peak hours.
Instead of diverting traffic from Jubilee Hills beneath the flyover, the traffic police planned to install a gate on the median and send the vehicles onto the flyover to join the road at Monappa Island. The plan did not last long.
Traffic inspector G. Satish said, “It is difficult to clear the traffic at this junction especially if the convoy of the Governor or the Chief Minister is heading from Madhapur to Begumpet.”
Commuter Amitabh Bose, a corporate employee, said, “The major traffic points are Madhapur, Jubilee Hills crossroads and Nagarjuna circle. At Madhapur and Jubilee Hills, traffic gets jammed due to the volume of traffic. But after crossing those points, vehicles get into a gridlock at Nagarjuna Circle.
The traffic jam sometimes extend beyond Sultan Ul Uloom College at Banjara Hills.” No GHMC town planning wing official could address this issue when questioned.
