Bengaluru: Citizens group calls for more walk signals

He expressed difficulty in finding vendors who can build good walk signals that are sensor based.

Bengaluru: Citizens for Bengaluru (CfB) members met Additional Commissioner (Traffic) R. Hithendra on Thursday and requested for Walk Signals in all 353 traffic signals and on one-way streets for the safety of pedestrians and an orderly flow of traffic.

The CfB on Thursday apprised him of the recent public campaign ‘#NadeyaluBiDi #WalkSignalsBeku” and presented a letter on behalf of citizens. Being aware of the campaign, Hithendra responded positively towards their demands and assured that reducing pedestrian fatalities was the first and foremost priority for Bengaluru Traffic Police.

He agreed that walk signals are necessary on one-way streets as well. He expressed difficulty in finding vendors who can build good walk signals that are sensor based.

Srinivas Alavilli of CfB said, “There seem to be no issue with budget or intention of installing walk signals. It is a matter of project execution and challenges with procurement. It is rather disappointing to hear that the Silicon Valley of Asia does not seem to have technology vendors that can provide the sensor-based walk signals that the traffic police are looking for.”
