Hyderabad tops Economic Survey

Scores big on transparency in municipal administration.

Hyderabad: In the Economic Survey of India, 2016-17, released on Tuesday, Hyderabad was ranked number one in transparency and accountability in municipal administration, participation of citizens, revenue generated through property tax and licences issued by the corporation. Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development K.T. Rama Rao told this newspaper that the GHMC and its various teams must be congratulated for all the parameters on which it was rated — accountability, transparency, and particularly citizen participation.

The Economic Survey noted that “Hyderabad scores highly both in terms of the degree of transparency/accountability enacting and complying with a Public Disclosure Law and putting in place internal audit units.

Hyderabad shared the top spot with Pune, when it came to a local body generating its own revenue as a percentage of total expenditure. It was followed by Mumbai and Patna.
