Pinarayi Vijayan hints at new liquor policy

LDF to have a manifesto that seeks abstinence rather than total prohibition.

THRISSUR: It is up to the concerned governments to decide on the liquor policy, and the LDF will take its stand at an appropriate time, CPI (M) politburo member Pinarayi Vijayan told reporters in Guruvayur on Monday.

Asked about the present situation in Kerala where only the rich has access to the five-star bars, he said the LDF was not of the opinion that the poor should be served liquor at lower rates.

He said the LDF would have a manifesto that seeks abstinence rather than prohibition and its decision on Abkari policy would come later.

"There are no takers for Kerala Congress (M) leader K. M. Mani and SNDP general secretary Vellappally Natesan in Kerala politics," he said.

"Even though the meeting between Mr Mani and BJP national president Amit Shah in Kottayam was cancelled due to the prevailing political atmosphere, his son Jose K. Mani MP was invited to New Delhi to hold talks on the pretext of discussing the issues of rubber farmers."

With the solar scam, it has been proved that Chief Minister Oommen Chandy was controlled by a caucus and KPCC president who now supports Mr Chandy had forsaken his 'man of principles' image.

"K. Babu said he tendered his resignation upholding moral values. But like a gang of robbers who won't let any of its members to leave the group, he was taken back," he said.
