Curb carbide use in fruits ripening: Hyderabad High Court
Hyderabad: Expressing concern over the increase in the number of cancer cases, the Hyderabad High Court on Monday pointed out that consumption of tobacco was not only the cause for cancer; it was also a result of adulteration of milk, fruits and water.
A division bench comprising acting Chief Justice Dilip B. Bhosale and Justice S.V. Bhatt while dealing with a matter on Monday asked the principal secretaries of agriculture in Telangana and AP to prepare an action plan to prevent the use of calcium carbide to ripen fruits.
The officials appeared before the court following its directions and sought time to implement the measures suggested by the court. These included setting up ethylene chambers to ripen fruits, creating awareness among people about the ill-effects of consumption of artificially ripened fruit and filling up the posts of food safety officers. The court asked the officers to present short- and long-term plans to eradicate the artificial ripening of fruits.
HC disposes of MLA’s plea:
A division bench comprising acting Chief Justice Dilip B. Bhosale and Justice S.V. Bhatt of the Hyderabad High Court on Monday directed the Telangana government to consider the report of the Karimnagar district collector and the representation of Congress MLA T. Jeevan Reddy and take a decision in notifying some mandals in the district as drought-affected. The bench was disposing of a plea by Mr Jeevan Reddy seeking to direct the state government to reconsider the declaration of 21 mandals in Karimnagar district as drought-affected. He said the government has declared 19 mandals in the district as drought-affected out of the 40 mandals recommended by the collector.
