Coimbatore: Clear garbage from pond, urge farmers

Despite several demonstrations, the local administration turned a blind eye to their plight.

COIMBATORE: A group of farmers along with villagers came to Coimbatore collectorate on Monday and gave a petition urging the district collector Archana Patnaik to take steps for cleaning the Vellankuttai pond near Kinathukadavu as per a July 2015 court order.

The water from the pond is being used for agriculture in Singrampalayam, Bagavathipalayam, and Muthoor villages for many years, they said.

M. Selvakumarasamy, a farmer told the DC, that water from the pond was being used for agriculture for over hundreds of years.

But in recent years, people from the nearby city started dumping their garbage in this pond, he said.

Despite several demonstrations, the local administration turned a blind eye to their plight, he charged.

“We filed a case in the court and got a favorable order to clear the tonnes of garbage from the pond; the district collector gave an order to executive officer to follow the court order on December 11, 2015, which has been ignored till date,” said Selvakumarasamy.

Clay pot makers petitioned the district collector, Archana Patnaik on Monday to simplify procedure for taking sand from local pond for their craft.

A group of 100 potters who came to the Collectorate on public grievances day, in their petition demanded approval from geology and mines department to take sand from a local pond in Suloor Kothavadi.

M. Kalidahs, 50, a pot-maker told the Deccan Chronicle that more than 150 families were involved in pottery for many years in Coimbatore district. "We not only took this as a family business from our forefathers, but also it's a traditional art,” he said.
