Bihar petitioner, who filed case against Lord Ram', claims threat

A Sitamarhi-based lawyer filed a petition against Lord Ram' for renouncing his wife Sita.

Patna: A Sitamarhi-based lawyer, Chandan Thakur, who filed a petition against “Lord Ram” for renouncing his wife Sita says he faces a threat to his life after some radical organisation warned him of severe consequences if he didn’t withdraw the case.

After the case was admitted for hearing in the CJM’s court on Monday, he said he received several threatening calls from UP, Mumbai and other parts of the country in which callers asked him to “withdraw the case and publicly apologise or face the consequences”. However, he later said the court refused to accept his case when it came up for hearing on Monday. The court, he said, asked him about the witnesses who were present during the incident and about the exact date of the incident. “It is unfortunate that my petition got rejected by the court, but I don’t feel disheartened at all. I will continue to fight for the rights of Sita.” He added, “I didn’t file this petition to hurt anybody’s religious sentiments.”

Mr Thakur was even sidelined by his colleagues who threatened to get his lawyer’s licence cancelled by declaring him mentally unstable. Lawyer’s association is already preparing to approach the Bar Council on the issue, he said.

“What’s wrong in seeking justice? I am a lawyer, it’s my duty to raise my voice against injustice and they say that I am insane. You tell me, am I,” he said. “I just want justice for Sita who faced atrocities from her husband. Women have been facing injustice since Treyta Yug and, in my view, justice in favour of Sita will strengthen women,” the lawyer told this newspaper on Monday.
