Dustbins back! BBMP installs few on pilot basis

People have also appreciated the efforts, as the bins prevent people from dumping garbage in open areas.

Bengaluru: To stop people from dumping garbage in public spaces, the BBMP has started placing dustbins at places where people tend to dump garbage.

These bins have been placed after repeated complaints from residents that the garbage menace has increased with people dumping garbage in storm water drains, pavements, vacant lands and corner of the roads.

A senior officer from the BBMP Solid Waste Department said, “Officials in all zones are identifying the spots where these bins can be placed. The bins are fixed to the ground so that they cannot be removed. They also have compartments for segregating wet and dry waste. People have also appreciated the efforts, as the bins prevent people from dumping garbage in open areas.”

He said that the bins have been placed in only some areas on an experimental basis to check how people use them. “For now, only a few dustbins have been placed, at Kalkere, Horamavu, J.P. Nagar, R.R. Nagar and surrounding areas. We have asked officials to identify the places where dustbins can be fixed. These bins have covers to prevent stray dogs from pulling away garbage,” the officer said.

Another officer said that the bins will be cleared by pourakarmikas every day.

Ankit Gowda, a resident of Kalkere, said, “It is a good move and people have been using these bins to dump garbage. There is no need to wait for the pourakarmikas to come to your doorstep to collect the garbage, as people can dump the garbage according to their convenient time. We hope that the BBMP regularly clears these bins and maintain it.”
