Hyderabad: Rs 10 lakh in Rs 2000 notes stolen

Once the cash is recovered, the West Zone police is likely to inform the income-tax officials to probe the source of the money.

Hyderabad: Over Rs 10 lakh in cash, all in Rs 2,000 denomination currency notes were allegedly stolen from the house of a retired IAS officer in Banjara Hills on Saturday night.

Retired IAS official, P. Vanamali’s wife Kalyani approached police alleging that the cash that they had kept in an almirah at their house had gone missing. Ms Kalyani alleged that her house help may have taken the cash.

Mr Vanamali, 73, had retired in the year 2000.

Ms Kalyani said that they had got the money from a friend, who runs a petrol bunk, for personal use. She claimed that they had documents to support the source of the cash.

Once the cash is recovered, the West Zone police is likely to inform the income-tax officials to probe the source of the money.

Banjara Hills detective inspector Venkateshwarlu Reddy said the complainant, a resident of Road No. 12 in Banjara Hills, stated that she had kept cash in the house on December 25, and found it missing on December 31.

“She said that she suspected a house help who had earlier worked in their house,” said the inspector. The police is also investigating role of a driver, who used to work in the house earlier.

“The cash was in Rs 2,000 notes. They told us that they got the cash from a petrol bunk owner on debit. We have booked a case of theft and we are investigating,” said the inspector.
