High Nipah alert in Kozhikode district

In order to create awareness among the public, coughing corners will be arranged in hospitals.

Kozhikode: Following the notification from the state government and directorate of health to take necessary precautions against the spread of NIPAH virus, the district medical officer Dr V. Jayasree has instructed the hospitals and medical centres of the district to be in high alert.

She also instructed the hospitals to provide special medical care to patients approaching with diseases related to lungs and encephalitis commonly known as brain fever. In order to create awareness among the public, coughing corners will be arranged in hospitals. The precautions to be taken to prevent spread of the infection are:
Cover face while coughing with a handkerchief or with hands.

Cleanse hands properly with water before taking food.

Avoid eating fruits and vegetables partly eaten or bitten by birds or animals.

Cleanse fruits and vegetables with water before eating.

Don’t burst explosives and crackers to scare away bats living in groups.

Use proper protective gears such as gloves, masks and rubber shoes while taking care of domestic animals.

Cleans feet with insecticides poured in foot dishes before entering animal farms.

Use nets to prevent bats and other birds from entering the farm.

Do not feed domestic animals with fruits of vegetables bitten by bats or other birds.

Make sure that the vehicle carrying food for farm animals is firstly treated for killing the insects.
