384 CCTV cameras installed at Vepery and Purasavakkam

The city police commissioner advised the public to install cameras outside their shops and houses.

Chennai: Continuing his campaign to bring every inch of the city fewer than 100 per cent CCTV coverage and thus ensuring better results in the prevention and detection of crime the city police commissioner A.K. Viswanathan on Friday inaugurated 384 CCTV cameras in Vepery and Purasawalkam police
limits.

The city police commissioner advised the public to install cameras outside their shops and houses. He said the number of crimes had come down considerably wherever closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras are functioning.

"We are installing CCTV units in the city as a movement. It is the Greater Chennai City Police's project to ensure the safety and security of everyone in the city. We are making all-out efforts to bring the entire city under CCTV surveillance," said A. K. Vishwanathan

Some areas where CCTVs aren't installed, the footage are collected from cameras nearest to it, he said. "This footage would help in quick and conclusive detection of crimes by the police," he said.

He renewed his appeal to the citizens, traders and establishments to install CCTV cameras that are no longer expensive while at sometimes contributing to the city's safety multifold.

After Kilpauk, the greater Chennai police have brought Vepery and Purasawalkam jurisdiction police under the surveillance and in the station limits, the cameras have been set up at important places, the footage from which can be viewed at a control room.
