State to decide on NICE fate in a week, says T B Jayachandra

The state government will take a decision on the BMIC project, being executed by NICE company in a week, after consulting legal experts.

Bengaluru: The state government will take a decision on the BMIC project, being executed by NICE company in a week, after consulting legal experts.
Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mr T.B. Jayachandra said that though the Legislature Committee had submitted its report on irregularities committed by NICE, many issues were still being heard by the courts.

While 34 cases were pending in Karnataka High Court, another 20 were before the Supreme Court. The suggestions of the House Committee include one on the government taking over the entire project. The government is not averse to taking over the project, but wants to tread cautiously as the judiciary is also seized of the matter, Mr Jayachandra said.

The state government is appointing Counsellers for both the Supreme Court and High Court to effectively fight the case. Interestingly, NICE promoter Mr Ashok Kheny had obtained a stay on all the issues raised in the House Committee report. To take a decision, the opinion of legal experts is also needed. After getting legal opinion, the issue would be taken up during the next cabinet meeting, Jayachandra said.

Meanwhile, the government has authorised MSIL to import sand from other countries and relaxed some of the rules made earlier.
