Karnataka: Police, women's panel to ensure safe New Year
Bengaluru: In order to avoid a repeat of last year’s unsavoury incidents of sexual harassment during New Year revelry, the police, bar and restaurant owners and Karnataka State Commission for Women (KSCW) are coming together to ensure safety of women revellers. With just a month left for New Year, KSCW Chairperson Nagalakshmi Bai met DG & IGP Neelamani Raju to discuss women’s issues, during which the safety of women during New Year's celebrations was given prominence.
“We are working with the police to make sure that such incidents are not repeated. We have launched a campaign to spread awareness about the potential dangers women could face and have urged them to take necessary precautions,” said a KSCW official. The bars and restaurants, especially the ones in the vicinity of M.G. Road, are taking preventive measures.
“We have met with the police and a clear plan has been laid out,” said Ashok Kothari, a member of the Bars and Restaurants Association of Rest House Road. “We have installed multiple CCTV cameras around the area and will employ more bouncers this time to keep things under control. The police too have assured us full support in this venture,” he added.
But despite the preventive measures being taken by the Police and the Bars and Restaurants Association, women party-goers in the city are sceptical. With various organisations coming together to ensure safe New Year’s celebrations, it remains to be seen if Bengaluru can recover from last year’s shock and ensure the celebrations more women-friendly.
