I-T sets up cell to monitor cash, bank transactions
Chennai: For the first time the Income-tax department has also set up a separate cell to monitor the cash transactions in north Chennai where poll-bound RK Nagar is located. According to income-tax department sources, the department is in touch with the public election department collecting basic details of the aspiring candidates and their banking details.
The chief electoral officer Rajesh Lakhoni has already insisted that banks in R K Nagar to keep an eye on unusual or heavy transactions in the area and pass the information to poll observers.
He had also instructed the election officials to check the online wallets like Paytm and also look out for the mobile stores that report excess recharge of talk time for voters in RK Nagar.
Meanwhile district election officer D. Karthikeyan inspected RK Nagar and conducted a review meeting with poll officials. He also kick-started the training session for poll officials to be deployed for polling and counting.
All the total 256 polling booths will be covered through CCTV surveillance and the counting stations will be heavily guarded by para military forces, the DEO said adding that at present the campaign of political parties are monitored to ensure that the model code is strictly adhered.
