Hyderabad: FASTag made must for new cars

National Highways across the country have about 370 toll plazas with RFID toll payment system.

Hyderabad: Four-wheelers to be sold from Friday should have FASTag, the RFID device for automatic payment at toll booths.

A notification issued by the Union ministry of road transport and highways says that motor vehicles should be fitted with FASTag from time to time by the manufacturer or its authorised dealer.

Though the Road Transport Authority (RTA) has not received the notification, manufacturers have informed their dealers.

Joint Transport Commissioner (Vigilance and IT) C. Ramesh said it could take some more time to receive the official communication.

Mr Yalamanchili Rama Koteswar Rao of the Automobile Dealers’ Association (TS and AP) said the FASTag device should be fixed on the front windscreens.

The device employs Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to make toll payments directly from prepaid or savings accounts.

Mr Rao said that the new rule would not be a burden to vehicle buyers.
“The manufacturers have already supplied vehicles fitted with RFIDs. For those which were bought earlier, the dealers will fix them before the registration,” he said.
