By-poll triggers filling of potholes in RK Nagar

Chennai: Going through the fourth election model code of conduct and its regulations in a row, RK Nagar constituency has always received ‘special treatment’ from the Greater Chennai Corporation.

This time around the civic body has started filling potholes in rain-battered roads using ‘ready-mix’. However, residents of other parts of the city are still waiting for the officials’ attention to have smoother rides.

For the last two days, Chennai Corporation workers have been filling potholes on damaged roads of RK Nagar, which is set to decide the fate of the AIADMK and its government. To give a quick respite to the voters, the civic body brought ‘bitumen mix’ all the way down from Kolkata and started filling potholes. The ready-mix bitumen is easy to spread and its bonding strength is higher than conventional bitumen, a Chennai Corporation official said.

While civic body looks after RK Nagar, roads in other parts of the city continue to give riders bumpy rides. “This road was laid recently before the onset of NE monsoon. But most parts of the road were damaged during the first spell of monsoon and the potholes remain unattended, thus make riding difficult”, M. Mohan Raj of Valasaravakkam said, pointing to Anna Main Road in KK Nagar.

It is also learnt that Chennai Corporation-owned bitumen-manufacturing unit in Chennai had been closed citing environmental issues recently. When contacted, a senior corporation official attached to the north regional office refused to comment on the hasty repairing of RK Nagar roads.
