Thiruvananthapuram: A major fire broke out at Family Plastics at Manvila Industrial Estate near Sreekariyam on the outskirts of the city late on Wednesday.
Over a dozen fire-fighting units from various stations were engaged in tackling the fire which went into late night. Residents in nearby areas were evacuated and a couple of persons were hospitalised after suffering suffocation.
According to local sources, the fire broke out at the unit by 7.30 p.m. and within minutes it spread rapidly to the entire unit. Initially couple of units from the Kazhakkoottam fire and rescue station tried to put out the fire. But as the situation was beyond control, scores of fire fighting units from all nearby fire stations were pressed into service. Service of fire tenders of the city airport and VSSC were also sought.
