Flood report has losses missing

Officials said no damage in Cheranellore.

Kochi: The testimony of Cheranellore Grama Panchayat secretary that no house in the panchayat has been made uninhabitable in the August floods has come as a rude shock to several flood-affected people in the area forcing Hibi Eden, MLA, has come out in protest against it.

The secretary and assistant engineer said in their report to the deputy director of panchayats that the inspection carried out as per the list prepared using the mobile app revealed that there was no house that has been made uninhabitable.

The various categories of damage were totally destroyed land and houses, totally destroyed house and houses that were damaged above 25 per cent which were made uninhabitable.

In his protest letter to local self government minister A.C. Moideen on Wednesday, Mr Eden said at least 30,000 persons were rehabilitated from the panchayat after the floods hit it.

“As per the estimate given by people's representatives in the area cutting across party lines, it has been revealed that 270 houses were fully damaged in the floods while 670 houses were partially damaged," he said. "Walls of several houses were weakened after flood waters entered it. Even now nine families are in camps. At a time when people's representatives are engaged in bringing succour to them, this act of an official amounts to challenging the people.”

The MLA also demanded strict disciplinary action against the officials and measures to include those eligible in the list.
